II. Community and Plus editions

Starting with version 2.0, pgModeler is distributed in two editions. pgModeler Community remains free and open-source and keeps the core modeling experience. pgModeler Plus is a paid edition that includes everything in Community and adds the tools that work directly with PostgreSQL servers, plus a set of plug-ins. This documentation covers both editions, and the sections that describe Plus-only features say so.

What each edition includes

FeatureCommunityPlus
Creating and editing database models, all object types and relationships (Chapters 2, 3, and 7)✔✔
Multi-scene models, layers, tags, changelog, object search, and model validation (Chapter 1 and Chapter 6)✔✔
SQL, XML, PNG/SVG, and data dictionary generation (Export view, Chapter 5)✔✔
Export to a database server✔✔
Model fix and objects' metadata handling (Chapter 6)✔✔
Settings, sample models, and translated user interface (Chapters 4 and 8)✔✔
Database import (reverse engineering, Import view)✔
Model and database comparison (Diff view)✔
Manage view: database explorer, SQL execution tool, and data handling (grid)✔
Plug-ins: quick object editing, split model format, SSH tunnel, backup utilities, query variables, quick objects creation, SQL sessions, and versioning (see 8.2. Available pgModeler Plus plug-ins)✔

The command-line interface follows the same rule: operations that depend on a database, like importing and comparing, require Plus.

note

The screenshots of this documentation were taken from pgModeler Plus so that every tool can be shown. In Community, the views and tools that are exclusive to Plus are not available.

The license of pgModeler Plus

pgModeler Plus needs a license, which is validated online with the credentials provided at purchase. The complete terms and conditions of use are available at pgmodeler.io/terms. The license data (name, e-mail, a masked access token, the activation date, and the expiration date) can be consulted at any moment through the license information action of the main window.

  • Online validation. The license is checked online from time to time. If the application can't reach the server, it keeps working for an offline usage period defined by the license, and the license information dialog shows how many days are left. When the period ends, pgModeler Plus must connect to the internet again to validate the license, and the command-line interface also requires a valid license.
  • Invalid or expired license. When the license can't be validated or has expired, most features remain locked until valid license data is provided.
  • Trial version. A trial license allows evaluating pgModeler Plus, which is identified by the text (Trial) in the main window title. The trial has these limitations: up to 5 open models, 10 import operations, 10 diff operations, and 10 export operations; the export to a database server is disabled; up to 150 object changes per model; and imported models, as well as models that exceed the object limit, can't be saved to a file. Trial licenses can't be used inside virtual machines.

If a trial license expires, you can purchase a license to keep using pgModeler Plus or switch to the open-source Community edition.
